题目:An Age-structured Syphilis Model

摘要:Syphilis is a highly contagious bacterial disease with different stages which results in substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. In particular, it has been resurging among all age groups in both developed and developing countries in the last a few years after the COVID-19 pandemic. Since sexual contact is the main transmission mode, age structure of the host is crucial for the spread of syphilis. In this talk, we introduce an age-structured epidemic model with four infection stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary) to study the transmission dynamics of syphilis. First we establish the well-posedness of the initial–boundary value problem and derive an explicit expression of the basic reproduction number. Then we study global stability of the disease-free steady state and the uniqueness and local stability of the endemic steady state. Next we consider the optimal control of the age-structured model and calibrate the reported data in China by using a demographic model utilizing the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Finally, we apply the relevant simulation results to numerically simulate the age-structured model. Our results indicate that (i) for the syphilis demographic model the basic reproduction number R_0=2.4876 with CI (95%) (1.6823, 3.1434) in China; (ii) tertiary stage infection is more severe in the elderly population; (iii) reducing the number of secondary and latent stage syphilis individuals can effectively reduce the total number of infected population.

Shigui Ruan(阮士贵),1992年获得加拿大阿尔伯特大学数学系博士学位,随后在加拿大菲尔兹数学所做Junior Fellow、在麦克马斯特大学做博士后。1994-2002在加拿大道尔豪斯大学数学与统计系先后任助理教授和副教授。现为美国迈阿密大学数学系终身教授。主要研究领域是动力系统和微分方程及其在生物和医学中的应用。在包括《PNAS》、《Lancet Infect.Dis.》、《Memoirs Amer.Math.Soc.》、《J.Math.Pures Appl.》、《Math.Ann.》等学术期刊发表了200多篇学术论文,受到了国内外同行的关注与大量引用。目前担任重要学术期刊如《BMC Infectious Diseases》、《Bulletin of Mathematical Biology》(高级编委)、《Mathematical Biosciences》等杂志的编委。作为项目负责人多次获得美国国家卫生研究院(NIH)、美国国家科学基金(NSF)和中国国家自然科学基金多项资助。2013年获得海外及港澳学者合作研究基金(原海外杰青)资助。
